Vestr fór eg um ver | West over water
I fared
en eg Viðris ber | bearing poetry's waves to the shore
munstrandar mar, | of the war-god's heart;
svo er mitt of far. | my course was set.
Dró eg eik á flot | I launched my oaken craft
við ísa brot. | at the breaking of ice,
Hlóð eg mærðar hlut | loaded my cargo of praise
míns knarrar skut. | aboard my longboat aft.
Buðumst hilmir löð, | The warrior welcomed me,
þar á eg hróðurs of kvöð. | to him my praise is due.
Ber eg Óðins mjöð | I carry Odin's mead
á Engla bjöð. | to England's meadows.
Lofað vísa vann, | The leader I laud,
víst mæri eg þann. | sing surely his praise;
Hljóðs biðjum hann | I ask to be heard,
því að hróðr of fann. | an ode I can devise.
Why did I choose this text?
The original underlying meaning of the text is: Egill saved his own life when he was in the power of King Eiríkr blóðøx Haraldsson in York by composing this poem overnight and reciting it to the king the next morning. It is simply a poem of praise to the king, according to W. Short (n.d.)
But if I were to give it meaning I would say that this stanza is about a warrior or soldier that has been given a task and comes back from that task with evidence. Odin is the god of war and Valhalla, so I would think this warrior has brought back a dead body to show he fulfilled his duty and ask praise from the leader, who gave him the task and gives him an ode for it.
I thought this was very interesting because this is what happens with war, you are given a task and you must execute that, even if it will cost you your own life. To live or die, that's what was it all about.
How did I come up with this text?
I actually found it per accident. I was roaming for something else when I found this on a website that explained what Stanzas are ( a couplet of a skaldic Poetry ). This website explained the meaning of a few stanzas and that's where I found this text.
How does the text link to the Theme or any other Theme discussed?
I already explained that this stanza is about War but it's also about success. I think you can also link this to unrealistic dreams since the warrior asks for an Ode, he hopes he will be praised for his hard work and I think praise in that time was worth a lot. This poem or skaldic Poetry comes from the Viking Era and that is the link to the Theme and the fact he calls it Odin's mead, which I think means: Belongs to Odin now or Soulless body.
Personal response
I have never been someone who likes poetry, but I begin to see why people like it so much. People can give it their own meaning, which might be totally different from the actual meaning but still makes sense. I, however, am I straight to the point kind of person. I was never a fan of trying to understand what the writer means but I seem to like it more nowadays. I like how the poem is actually still relevant, even if we don't live in the Viking Era anymore... there is a war somewhere every single day.
